Merry Christmas, dear Love Liberty Shelter friends!
Christmas . . . when history changed, when hope for mankind sprang forth, when Jesus was born on a new day.
Today the five of us are celebrating the holiday here at home in the tiny house. White horses and deer graze in the snowy pastures surrounding us, a blazing fire burns in the wood stove, French toast is frying in the skillet, and carols play overhead.
This is our first Christmas Day spent in the tiny house, as we flew the coop last December to be with family in Arizona. But this time I can truly say, I’m glad we’re here for our own little white Christmas!
Today, we’re skipping gift-opening in favor of cooking together, playing in the snow, reading aloud about Jesus’ birth, as well as how Almanzo Wilder’s family celebrated Christmas, and singing carols and hymns.
What are your favorite Christmas songs, the ones you look forward to year after year? And who do you love to hear singing these timeless carols?
Favorites of mine include:
- Celine Dion’s O Holy Night
- Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, The Holly and the Ivy
- Dolly Parton’s He’s Alive (an Easter song, but still . . . so powerful)
Born on a New Day, a Modern Carol
But I’ve discovered a new favorite, one that dovetails with the gorgeous classics of old: Born on a New Day.
First entitled New Day by composer John David of Cardiff, the lyrics reflected an environmental theme. Prestigious a cappella vocal ensemble the King’s Singers of King’s College, Cambridge, England sang this piece and made it famous. King Singer Philip Lawson later wrote fresh lyrics on the theme of Christ’s coming, creating a new beautiful Christmas carol.
Born on a New Day, sung by the King’s Singers
Born a New Day Lyrics
You are the new day,
You are the new day.
Meekness, love, humility.
Come down to us this day:
Christ, your birth has proved to me
You are the new day.
Quiet in a stall you lie,
Angels watching in the sky
Whisper to you from on high,
“You are the new day.”
When our life is darkest night,
Hope has burned away;
Love, your ray of guiding light,
Show us the new day.
Love of all things great and small
Leaving none, embracing all,
Fold around me where I fall,
Bring in the new day.
This new day will be
A turning point for everyone.
If we let the Christ-child in, and
Reach for the new day.
Christ the Way, the Truth, the Life;
Healing sadness, ending strife;
You we welcome, Lord of life,
Born on a new day.
You are the new day.”
And with this beautiful new carol of faith, hope, and love, we wish you a very merry Christmas!
